Every time you pay for fuel with a card, a roughly 1% "fuel surcharge" is added by the payment network. A fuel credit card waives this surcharge — a guaranteed saving before any reward points.
How the waiver works
The waiver is typically 1% of the fuel transaction, up to a monthly cap (often ₹100–₹250) and within a per-transaction range. Spend outside that range and the surcharge isn't refunded.
Surcharge waiver vs fuel rewards
The waiver (~1%) is separate from the reward points a co-branded fuel card earns at its partner pump — which can be worth 5–8%. A general card may waive the surcharge but won't give the accelerated fuel rewards.
A fuel card pays off only if you refuel regularly at one network (IndianOil, BPCL or HPCL). Light users often do better with a flat-cashback or lifetime-free card.
