"Free" credit cards come in two very different shapes, and confusing them can cost you a few thousand rupees a year.
True lifetime-free
A lifetime-free (LTF) card charges no joining fee and no annual fee, ever — regardless of how much you spend. You can keep it open at zero cost, which also helps lengthen your credit history.
Spend-based fee waiver
Many "free" cards actually charge an annual fee that's only refunded if you spend a threshold (say ₹2 lakh) that year. Miss the spend and you pay the fee. That's a waiver, not lifetime-free.
Some popular cashback cards are spend-waiver, not lifetime-free — always check whether the fee is waived "on spend" or genuinely never charged.
