How we'll rank these
We rank cards by genuine reader benefit for this use case — the real value after the annual fee, the cap on bonus rewards, and how easily you qualify — never by any commission. Every figure is taken from, and linked to, the issuer's official page and dated. We don't publish star ratings we can't defend. Our methodology · editorial policy.
How to choose a cashback card
Cashback comes in two shapes: a flat rate on everything, or a higher rate on online/partner spends with a flat rate elsewhere. The catch is usually a monthly cap on the accelerated category and a minimum spend to waive the fee. A spend-based fee waiver is not the same as lifetime-free — you only avoid the fee if you spend the threshold.
Other credit-card categories
Best cashback credit cards — FAQs
Flat cashback (a single rate on everything) is simplest and predictable. Accelerated cashback pays more on specific categories (online, a partner store) but usually with a monthly cap and a lower base rate elsewhere. The best choice depends on where most of your spending goes.
No. A spend-based fee waiver only refunds the annual fee if you spend a set amount that year — miss the threshold and you pay the fee. A genuinely lifetime-free card never charges a fee regardless of spend. We separate the two on our lifetime-free page.
Cashback that's a discount/reward on your own spending is generally not treated as taxable income for individuals. Large or unusual reward inflows can attract scrutiny. This is general information, not tax advice — consult a professional for your situation.
This is an informational comparison, not financial advice or a recommendation to apply for any specific card. Card terms change frequently — always confirm the current fees, reward rates and eligibility on the card's official page before applying. Using credit responsibly and paying in full avoids interest charges.
